Reducing Cognitive Load

Objective:

  • Improve the usability of the original SceneIt? Facebook game.
    • Our data showed that players were not interacting with the social and progess widget on the main home screen.
    • Revise broken visual patterns and affordances.
    • Define best practices and apply to the interface.
  • Add support for marketing messaging on the home screen.

UX Design Process:

Analysis:

Graphic Design Patterns and Principles
  • Labels and player data fields are not well defined.
  • Hard to distinguish what is what without lots of cognitive effort.
  • Player stat area is not a very efficient use of the space.
  • Interactive patterns are not consistent between top and bottom areas of the Interface.
New Feature Accommodation
  • Reclaim wasted player data area to make room for Leader-boards
  • Apply new design patterns from the main content widget. (Top Area)

Interface Improvements:

New Tab Design

Purchase Screen

Power Ups were a new key monetizing feature that we introduced in our redesign. The new design was more visually engaging and established a more cohesive look and feel.

New Start Quiz Screen

This screen shows the new quiz start and power-up selection

New Quiz Results Screen

The “mascot” avatar was in the original design but had an inconsistant presence. I brought the character into some of the other screens in the new design.

First Time User Experience

This is the first time experience for a new user. To help them get into a game as quickly as possible I recommended that we give the user just 4 popular quizzes each from a different genera of movie.

New Daily Bonus Feature

With the introduction of power-ups we chose to use them as incentive for returning every day to the app. This incentive had an impact on our DAU stats, driving up the number of daily users.

New Daily Challenge Feature

Daily challenges were becoming a popular feature of the causal games in the market. They were a natural fit to help give players incentive to play longer as well as introduce them to the features of game experience.

Pop-Up Dialog: New Unified Look and Function

The new design was applied to all of the dialog pop-ups throughout the app giving a more consistent visual experience.
